Super Bowl XLII is an American football game that was played between the American Football Conference champions the New England Patriots and the National Football Conference champions the New York Giants to determine which team would be the 2007 season champions for the National Football League.

This game is known as one of the biggest upsets in the history of Super Bowl games. The New York Giants came to the game with a season record of 14-6 and defeated the New England Patriots, who held an 18-1 record for the season. The New England Patriots were prevented from being the next undefeated team since the Miami Dolphins finished 17-0 in 1972. The New York Giants defeated the New England Patriots by three points with a final score of 17-14.

With that, the New York Giants became the first wild card team in the National Football Conference to be victorious at a Super Bowl. The New York Giants were also the fifth wild card, fourth in more than a decade, from any conference to win a National Football League championship. The win was the seventh National Football League championship for the franchise as well as the third time to win the Super Bowl. It was the first championship title for New York since 1991 at the Super Bowl XXV.

Tom Coughlin was the head coach for the New York Giants and Bill Belichick was the head coach for the New England Patriots. "Who Wants It More?" became the Super Bowl XLII tagline.

The game took place in Glendale, Arizona, at the University of Phoenix Stadium on February 3, 2008. This game was kind of a rematch for the regular season's last game in which the New England Patriots won 38-35. This was the first time that any team had a perfect regular season since the Miami Dolphins in 1972, as well as the first perfect season since the schedule was expanded to a sixteen game season in 1978. The New England Patriots came to Super Bowl XLII favored by twelve points.

Super Bowl XLII was the most viewed Super Bowl in the history of the televised game. There were 97.5 million fans tuned in from the United States. Close to 150 million viewers tuned in for some part of the broadcast. With a rating of 43.3, the game brought in Nielsen's highest ratings for the Super Bowl since Super Bowl XXXIV. The game broadcast was the second most watched program ever on television in the United States.
